Family values instilled in co-owners
Nu-Sound co-owners Lew Davis and Wava Brians learned the lessons of integrity, honesty and family unity from their parents and grandmother, and have carried those principles into the daily operation of their business.

“(My father) always told us we should keep our word,” said Lew Davis. “He said a handshake is an agreement, even though in today’s society, everybody wants a written contract.
“If we tell someone we are going to do something, that’s the way it’s going to be,” Lew said.
Lew’s interest in helping older people took root when he was quite young. He often visited his grandmother, who was losing her hearing. Wava and Lew, who are siblings, saw firsthand how hearing loss can weaken and frustrate communication.
“My grandmother lived during a time when technology couldn’t help much with her problem,” Lew said. “If she were alive today, the advances made in the industry could have helped her immensely.”
The grandmother, Mary Brockman Holt, was a native of the small far-Eastern Oklahoma town of Vian, and passed down to her daughter Lucy, strong personal standards and values.

Growing up during the Depression, Vernon and Lucy Davis, in turn, raised their young children, Wava and Lew, in Vian. The couple were both from large families and instilled family values in their children as well as principles of honesty, reliability and a work ethic.

Small towns seem to have a special formula that brings out the best in the residents.
Lucy Davis speaks highly of her mother. “She was an inspiring woman who believed in helping others. She played a big part in our lives and the lives of her grandchildren.
In 1955, the Davis family moved to Tulsa. Vernon, a toolmaker by trade, taught son Lew about all types of tools and quality craftsmanship.
Almost 35 years later, a friend would notice Lew’s interest in hearing aids and his aptitude in working with people. He advised him to enter the hearing aid business. A natural, Lew obtained board certification in Hearing Instrument Sciences and started fitting hearing aids.
A few years later, he would move to Oklahoma City to start his own hearing aid manufacturing company, developing his ideas for a service-based company catering to his client’s individual needs.
Lew had a vision to own a hearing aid company complete with everything needed to take a client from hearing test to custom fitting to manufacturing of the hearing aid. And with the help of his family, Lew Davis’ dream became a reality with Nu-Sound.
Vernon has since passed on, but Lucy continues to instill her thoughts and values in the family business.
“Lew and Wava both know what work and sacrifice is all about,” said Lucy. And Mary Brackman Holt’s memory reminds them daily to be compassionate and be a company of integrity -- the small-town ideas that have taken them so far.
